On a more serious note, I am not really sure if Obama's win is really going to structurally change race relations. In fact, I think it may actually work against African Americans - you know, the President is black, what more do y'all want? kinda thing.
Also, I think the whole world is expecting too much from one man. He is going to save the world and change things from North Korea, middle east to spin around the credit crisis. Only a mythical man can do this. Or a Kyroptonite superhero.
Still, it's amazing to have a leader the world looks up to, after such a long time. The last great leader who brought the world together like this whom I can think of is Winston Churchill.

Have you ever watched the TV series Commander-in-Chief? It stars Geena Davis and is about America's first female president who was the VP when the President had a stroke so she took over, and then he died, so she continued, but was not really elected into office. Much of the series is about her fighting acceptance and credibility.
Anyway, in a recent episode, she was shown to be supporting the ERA (Equal Rights Amendment) and a lot of people were against her, and in a debate, she was asked why did she support it since she's proof that equal rights have been achieved. Her reply was that she's only one, whereas out there, there are the female college students battling sexual harassment, single mothers fighting equal pay and benefits, etc.
So you're right - with Obama as president, the African Americans could very well be told they've achieved equal status with white Americans (whatever that term means).
